Heel Pain Treatment in Idaho Falls

Stop starting every morning with that first painful step.

If the first few steps out of bed feel like stepping on a nail, or your heel aches after a run, a shift on your feet, or a day chasing kids, you are dealing with one of the most common problems we see. The good news: most heel pain gets better without surgery when it is diagnosed correctly and treated at the source.

At Motion Focused Podiatry in Idaho Falls, Dr. Tom Lyman looks past the sore spot to find out why your heel hurts, then builds a plan to get you moving again, not just resting and waiting.

What's causing your heel pain?

Heel pain isn’t one condition. Where it hurts, when it hurts, and how you move all point to the cause. The most common include:

  • Plantar fasciitis: Sharp pain on the bottom of the heel, worst with the first steps in the morning or after sitting. This is the most common cause of heel pain in adults.
  • Achilles tendinopathy: Pain and stiffness at the back of the heel, often in runners and active adults.
  • Heel spurs: Bony growths that often accompany long-standing plantar fasciitis. The spur is usually not the actual source of pain.
  • Nerve entrapment: Burning, tingling, or pain that doesn’t respond to typical plantar fasciitis care.
  • Stress fractures and bursitis: Less common, but important to rule out, especially in athletes.

Getting the diagnosis right is the difference between months of trial and error and a plan that works. That’s why every evaluation includes on-site X-rays when needed and a look at how you actually walk.

Why heel pain keeps coming back

Most heel pain is a movement problem. Tight calves, foot mechanics, training load, footwear, and the way your foot strikes the ground all put repeated stress on the heel. Treating the pain without addressing the motion behind it is why so many people get a cortisone shot, feel better for a few weeks, and end up right back where they started.

Dr. Lyman holds a Master’s degree in kinesiology, the science of human movement, alongside his podiatric medical training. That background shapes every heel pain plan we build.

Physical Therapy Foot With Acoustic Shock Waves

How we treat heel pain

Our philosophy is simple: movement is medicine. Whenever possible, we treat heel pain in a way that keeps you active while you heal.

  • 3D gait and movement analysis: We look at how your foot loads with every step to find the mechanical source of the stress.
  • Focused shockwave therapy (STORZ Medical): A non-invasive, in-office treatment that uses acoustic pressure waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing response in stubborn plantar fascia and Achilles tissue. No needles, no downtime.
  • MLS laser therapy: A dual-wavelength laser treatment used to reduce pain and inflammation. Sessions are quick and painless.
  • Regenerative injections: For chronic cases that haven’t responded to other care, we may discuss regenerative injection options.
  • Custom orthotics, stretching, and footwear guidance: The foundation for keeping heel pain from coming back.
  • Minimally invasive surgery, when truly needed: Most patients never need surgery. For the small number who do, Dr. Lyman is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon who teaches minimal incision techniques to other surgeons.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my heel pain is plantar fasciitis?

The classic sign is sharp pain on the bottom of the heel with your first steps in the morning or after sitting, which eases a bit as you move, then returns after long periods on your feet. Other conditions can feel similar, so an exam is the best way to know.

Will my heel pain go away on its own?

Sometimes, but many cases linger for months or longer, especially when the underlying mechanics aren't addressed. If your pain has lasted more than a few weeks or keeps returning, it's worth getting evaluated.

Do I need surgery for heel pain?

Rarely. The large majority of heel pain improves with non-surgical care. Surgery is only considered when conservative treatment hasn't worked.

Does shockwave therapy hurt?

Most patients describe mild to moderate discomfort during treatment that stops when the session ends. There's no downtime, and most people walk out and return to normal activity.

Can I keep running or exercising while my heel heals?

Often, yes, with modifications. Keeping you as active as safely possible is a core part of how we treat.

Do you take insurance?

We are a direct-pay practice and don't bill insurance directly. That lets us offer transparent pricing and spend more time with each patient. Many patients use HSA/FSA funds, and we can provide paperwork for you to submit for possible reimbursement.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly.
